" I believe that Joan Hogan is the master of her
own beliefs and vision, in visual terms." (John Behan R.H.A. October
2004)
loan Hogan, visual artist, is a graduate of GMIT. She held her debut
exhibition "Metamorphosis" in 2001. Specializing in paint,
this display of strong contemporary works was the dynamic launch of
her artistic career. She drew her inspiration for this exhibition from
the river Corrib and environs, which became the metaphor for her personal
journey.
Drawing on a variety of influences including El Greco, Goya, Turner
and Friedrich, the energy in her works emanates as much ITom her vibrant
use of colour, as from her dramatic use of form and subject matter.
Her works are an expression of the Greek philosophy metanoia, "to
go beyond one's usual way of experiencing life", where she challenges
the viewer not only to look at the painting, but to step beyond the
mere image. As a result she creates a world that appears to hang between
the intervals of time and space. Her continuing development as an artist
is displayed in her Exhibition "Energos" which reflects the
artist's own life journey, sublimated through memory and imagination,
resulting in work that touches the soul of the viewer.
Some of her exhibitions include:
