Tales of the West of Ireland

James Berry
(edited by Gertrude Horgan)

A collection of newspaper articles written for the Mayo News in the 19th Century. James Berry was a native of Co. Mayo and, like Carleton, was of peasant stock. The tales introduce all manner of characters - packmen, raparees and smugglers; they are set in bleak and haunting landscapes; and the stories are about murder, manhunts, smuggling, wakes, rebellion and starvation.
